BJ Services recently installed its InjectSafe chemical-injection system for the deliquification of two gas wells in the North Sea, a first for the technology. The system, which was installed with the company’s DynaCoil capillary-injection strings, allowed for foaming agent to be injected downhole without comprising the integrity of the surface-controlled subsurface safety valve (SCSSV).
BJ Services developed the InjectSafe system as a way for wells to retain SCSSV integrity and operability by preserving the existing control-line function, while also allowing injection of treatment fluids directly to the wellbore below the SCSSV. The system achieves this by enabling the installation of small diameter capillary strings within the production tubing; the strings can be run to depths of 22,000 ft (7000 m), the company states.
Foaming agents were injected in the two North Sea wells to foam produced condensate and prevent liquid loading in the well, thus enabling continuous flow of gas and an increase in overall gas-production rates.
In addition to foamers, the system can be used to inject corrosion inhibitors and flow-assurance chemistries to protect tubulars, lower completions, and the SCSSV from corrosion, scale and paraffin deposits, and the build-up of emulsions.
BJ states that the injection system is run in conjunction with their DynaCoil capillary-injection tubing, using specially engineered capillary-tubing equipment. This equipment is designed specifically for running small-bore tubing into wells and has the advantage of requiring a small wellsite footprint, which reduces the impact on other platform operations.

Deploying the InjectSafe valve.
To install the InjectSafe system, the existing tubing-retrievable SCSSV is locked open and the system?including a BJ Services’ FlowSafe SCSSV and capillary string assembly that is long enough to reach the predetermined depth?is run in the well on wireline, then set and locked in place. A stinger with a special injector head is attached to the upper capillary string and run into the well until the stinger locates in the downhole receptacle within the InjectSafe SCSSV system.
Once the stinger locates, complete fluid connection is established from the surface, around the safety valve, and to the bottom of the well, enabling chemical or foamer injection to take place. Four check valves located within the system prevent any well backflow from reaching the surface through the capillary string. Two valves are located in a bottomhole assembly, one within the InjectSafe SCSSV body, and one inside of the stinger.
The recent InjectSafe installation in the North Sea, which was carried out with operational support from BJ Services’ base in Aberdeen, represents the first time that this technology has been deployed offshore in Europe. “By installing this system offshore we can economically treat wells prone to production-related issues such as liquid loading, salting, waxing, scaling, and hydrate problems,” said John Anderson, region vice president?Europe & West Africa for BJ. “These conditions can now be treated without pulling the tubing to install a capillary string, which would be a more expensive and time-consuming option,” he added.
